Summer Flashback: The Houston Public Library

Everyone at the Houston Public Library were so awesome. They even made giant Fish Stick Nunchucks!
I landed at IAH a day ahead of my event at the Houston Public Library and was greeted by a familiar face...

It was an unbelievable day at the Houston Public Library. These librarians went all out! Just crazy over the top! They decorated their hallways to look like the back alley of a PunkFarm‬ concert.

Lost Elephant posters at the Houston Library! Listed on the tear-aways: call numbers to books about elephants!

At the Houston Library - kids could be any Lunch Lady villain they wanted to be!

Honey, I shrunk the Lunch Lady. Giant LL gadgets at the Houston Library.

The librarians feted art contest entrants with lunch and free books inside lunch boxes!

Dress up and rock with Punk Farm or visit the actual animals in the petting zoo!

The kids of the Houston Library will grow up to fill our libraries and rule our world!

Thank you Houston Library librarians and patrons for an incredible day!

Check out more of the awesomeness on the Houston Public Library's Flickr page!

Save the Date—School Lunch Superhero Day 2014!

School Lunch Superhero Day will always be celebrated on the first Friday of May. In this upcoming school year, that would be May 2, 2014. Please mark your calendars!

Summer Flashback: Blue Bunny Bookshop

Hey guys,
I have attended some truly awesome events the past few months. This Summer Flashback is for the Blue Bunny Bookshop Platypus Police Squad Launch Party.
Thank you to the Blue Bunny Bookshop in Dedham, MA for putting on such a phenomenal party for Platypus Police Squad!

At the PPS launch at Blue Bunny Books, the Dedham Chief of Police was on hand to dispense safety tips and Jr. badges, and I was flash-mobbed by actual lunch ladies who stormed the party with homemade cookies and chocolate milk!

There were lots of Boston-based kidlit folks in attendance! So nice to meet many bloggers/Tweeters in person!

For many, many reasons, I was most excited to see my friend Chris, who is a member of the Watertown Police. I gave him a piece of art from the book.

A HUGE thank you to everybody at Blue Bunny Books for putting together such a great event, and for being such a pillar of their community!

Monkey Boy in the New York Times!

The New York Times just conducted a board book roundup in their books section and I am beyond psyched to have the board book edition of Good Night, Monkey Boy included.

Says The Times:
“If monkey business is part of your family’s bedtime routine, this book may give your children the cozy feeling that they are not lone miscreants but part of a tribe. That may reassure the parents of monkeys, too!”

Thank you, New York Times!!!

My ALA schedule

By now librarians across the country are packing their bags and headed to Chicago for the annual American Library Association conference. (Did you know that the original plot for Lunch Lady and the League of Librarians initially revolved around the librarians secretly meeting at a conference to plan world domination? My editor didn't think it kid-centric enough, so that aspect was scrapped.)

I can't wait to join the festivities. Perhaps I'll see you there? Here is where you'll find me:

How a last-minute phone call, 18 minutes and a half a million viewschanged my life.

My TED Talk has surpassed half a million views! (This is from the ways that I can track. Aside from TED.com and various YouTube channels, TED also has a podcast download, so I have no idea how many times it's been viewed that way.) But—wow! A half a million people have now watched a talk that I gave to a room filled with 120 people. A talk that I didn't know I would give when I woke up that day.

So how have a last-minute phone call, 18 minutes and a half a million views changed my life?

Your instant reaction will be to guess that it's increased my exposure. And sure, my TED Talk certainly did help land a feature in The Boston Globe and an impending feature on NPR's All Things Considered. (Listen this Thursday! Check your local NPR affiliate!) While different sets of circumstances led to each of those PR pieces, it was the TED Talk that helped seal the deal in both cases.

But it goes much deeper than that. My story was never anything I was very open with publicly. While of course good friends knew the scope of my childhood story, the general public did not. That phone call to give a last-minute TED Talk came at a time when I was able to tell the story. Had that phone call come a few months earlier, probably not. A year earlier, definitely not. The experience taught me the power of being publicly honest and open. I have been so amazed to hear similar stories from both strangers and colleagues, and that has certainly been therapeutic for me. (And by the way, if you have emailed me, I haven't lost your email—I have a folder filled with emails that await responses concerning my TED Talk. I just want to be able to sit down and give your reply the time it deserves.)

Having had such a deep and meaningful story go viral is a funny thing. At first, it was incredibly strange to walk into a school and have everyone know such intimate details of my life, never mind the time I was recognized by a complete stranger at Dunkin Donuts. Most importantly, people have been able to share my story with children who are dealing with similar situations. Some of their stories punch you right in the gut. Others, right in the throat. I am so happy that I have been able to share my journey so directly with those kids. I can only begin to imagine what learning of such a story would have done for me as a child.

My TED experience has also taught me how to share personal information and deal with that knowledge being out there. As some of you may know, I have been working on writing a graphic novel memoir. (It would, of course be for a teen and older audience.) I would never be able to write that story so openly if it weren't for the reaction my TED Talk has received.

If you have watched the video, if you have shared it via social media or by email, I thank you endlessly. Because you are one in a half-million!

My sincerest thanks to you!

And of course thanks to my wife Gina. When I hung up the phone and said, "I was just asked to give a TED Talk in four hours and I have no idea what to talk about." Gina said, "Just be honest. Tell the story of your childhood as it happened."

You can read a more detailed account of how I prepared for the talk here.

And in case you missed it, here's the video:

If Wes Anderson were 8 and directed a Platypus Police Squad movie

Castelton Elementary School in NY got a hold of a Platypus Police Squad ARC and made this video. What's most amazing, this was a few months ago and the book is only coming out tomorrow! And that's not to mention the PPS-themed lunch and PPS fan art that adorned the school hallways! They win "first"!

A) How awesome to have a librarian with a green screen and B) there is a future Wes Anderson amongst this group!

LL9!

Lunch Lady and the Video Game Villain is the 9th book in the series and publishes today!

The race is on for a new student council president, and the Breakfast Bunch is rallying for Hector! The competition is already heavy, but the race heats up when school security is at stake: student and staff high-tech gadgets are disappearing left and right. Whoever the culprit is, this is one stealthy thief—and the school is so busy with the election that he gets away with it every time. Luckily some of Lunch Lady's own culinary gadgets have eluded the crook, but will they be enough to catch this sticky-fingered bandit? And will Hector be able to pull off a victory?

For teachers in Massachusetts and everywhere

On Monday, teachers and students across Massachusetts will return to school after what was a spring break filled with fear and anxiety. I created this piece after the horrific events at Newtown Elementary, but I thought folks might want to be reassured that they are making the world a better place each and every day through their work with our kids. If you'd like a high resolution of this image to print out and post in your classroom or teachers' lounge, please feel free to do so. This is for you: www.studiojjk.com/preserve_wonder.jpg

For Boston

For some time, I've been planning a blog post about the namesakes for the two heroes of my upcoming book, Platypus Police Squad. Of course, I had planned a lighthearted post about my two buddies who are cops--one in Watertown, MA, one for MIT. As you are well aware, it was not a lighthearted week here in Massachusetts. Or in New England, The United States, or the world.

I couldn't be more proud of these two men, who I've known since our teenage years, who wear a uniform, brandish a badge and keep our streets safe. They, and their colleagues, are what make our country great.

When I name characters, I often take parts of names from friends as starting points of inspiration. You'll see part of my friends' names in each lead character and their full names in the acknowledgements in the back of the book, thanking them for answering my many questions about the police force.

While they were both an invaluable part in my writing the book, I am more thankful for, and proud, of the work they did this week. They did it amongst a climate of inconceivable anxiety.

And they will do it tomorrow. And the day after that.

Nothing brought me greater joy this week than seeing Facebook photos of these officers holding their children on Friday night. C.M. and C.Z., you and your colleagues are true American heroes and I salute you.

A note on the publication date for Lunch Lady and the Video Game Villain

For all of the Lunch Lady fans who had April 9th marked on their calendar, I'm sorry to report that my publisher had to move the publication date back by a few weeks. Something about needing a little more time in-between printing the books and actually get the books distributed to stores. BUT copies were released early to The Odyssey Bookshop for Meltdown and they will be available for my April 10th event at Kids Ink in Indianapolis, IN.

If you're eager for LL9, you could always click on the above links and call the stores. Indies always ship, just sayin......

*wink*wink*
