A few days left to catch the Worcester Art Museum exhibit

My show at WAM comes down at the end of the weekend. So now is your last chance to catch the art on the walls!

Here are a few pictures from the opening reception, which was a phenomenal event. We raised a ton of money for the Joe and Shirl Scholarships. (And will again in a few weeks when the annual Cyber Monday auction goes live!) Thank you for all of your support!

I was astounded to see my first grade teacher, Mrs. Alisch, in attendance. I have such wonderful memories of her classroom.
Joan and Caroline drove 12 hours from Virginia to catch the show! They win the prize!!!

Jeanne Birdsall took care of her holiday shopping list!

Eyewitness Reports Art Auction

My old pal, Dan Santat, has created an art auction called Eyewitness Reports to benefit 826LA, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Dan's latest book, Oh No! written by Mac Barnett, is about a girl whose science project, a giant robot, goes out of control and destroys the city. Dan's idea behind Eyewitness Reports is that this one event would have lots of witnesses and what would their perspectives on the disaster be? He gathered 30 fantastic illustrators to contribute.

The art will be on display at the NUCLEUS GALLERY in LA from AUG 14 – 17.

And there will be two eBay auctions. AUG 23 – 27 and AUG 30 – SEPT 3. I'll be sure to post when my work goes up for sale.

I was happy to help because A) 826LA is a fantastic organization, B) Dan is a good friend of mine and C) I was excited to paint a giant robot destroying a city.

Here is my contribution, which will be up for auction at the end of the month.

Check out this cool video Dan made for the event:

Aht on the North Shore

There is still time to see some of my artwork in person in the North Shore!

Head to Wavepaint Gallery. (And do say hello to gallery owner and old RISD classmate Barbara for me.)

And while you are in the area, head to the Gallery Della-Piana. (And do say hello to my old Montserrat College of Art colleague Elissa for me. Don't forget to stop in next door and see the amazing work of seamstress Harper Della-Piana.)

There are lots of fantastic artists whose works are on display as well. Look! It's Kelly Murphy! Prepare for your jaw to drop. Her paintings are awesome.

exhibits & events on the North Shore

To all my friends on the nohth shoa' -- I'll be heading your way soon!

My work will be on display in two great exhibits. In Wenham, I'll be exhibiting alongside old friend and über talented illustrator Kelly Murphy at the Gallery Della-Piana. That show will go up on February 27th and be up through April 24th. I will be on hand to read from and sign my books on March 5th from 4:30-6. (152 Main St Wenham, MA 01984)

My work will also be on display at Wavepaint Gallery in Ipswich, MA. This is a group exhibit and will feature many talented published illustrators. Unfortunately, my schedule prohibits me from attending the events surrounding this exhibit. This show goes up on March 1st and comes down on April 17th. (4 Market Street, Ipswich MA 01938)

I will also be the speaker at the winter meeting of the PSA North Shore Council on Wednesday March 10th. Click here for information on registering and attending.

Gallery opening this Sunday

This Sunday, come on out to the R. Michelson Gallery for their 20th Annual Children's Illustration show. The party goes from 4-6 PM.

Here is my tribute to Where the Wild Things Are, which will be on display at the exhibit:

And here is the official announcement from the gallery:

Included in the exhibit will be such notable illustrators as Tomie dePaola, Mo Willems, Barry Moser, Tony DiTerlizzi, Alice Provensen, Jane Dyer, Mordicai Gerstein, Nonny Hogrogian, E. B. Lewis, Jules Feiffer, H.A. Rey, Jarrett J. Krosoczka, Rebecca Guay, Raul Colón, Steven Kellogg, Brooke Dyer, Wendell Minor, Karla Gudeon, Dr. Seuss, Diane deGroat and Kathryn Brown.

We will be featuring original Wild Thing drawings by Maurice Sendak and there will be a rare opportunity to view and purchase original artwork by Eric Carle.

Fifteen works will be offered for sale as a benefit for "Reader to Reader", a public charity dedicated to bringing books, free of charge, to needy schools and public libraries across the United States.

As an homage to their inspirations as illustrators, and in support of "Reader to Reader", Mo Willems draws Dr. Suess, Jarrett Krosoczka draws Sendak, and many of our other artists contribute their own surprising and personal tributes in the form of recollections and images to benefit this worthy cause.

Jane Yolen, children's book author and mentor to many artists and writers, will be receiving the second annual Norton Juster Award for service to the world of Children's Literature.

Where the Wild Things Are

Rich Michelson over at the R. Michelson Galleries put out a special call to his artists for this year's Children's Illustration show. He asked us to create a piece of art that paid tribute to a book that was especially influential to us. I, like many, love and adore Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak.

I had so much fun creating this piece and I hope that you enjoy it. You can view the painting in person, along with my original picture book art and Lunch Lady art, at this year's exhibit, which opens on November 8th.

And in true pinch-me fashion, there will also be original Sendak Wild Things drawings on the walls.

Are you as excited about the Where the Wild Things Are movie as I am?
